Karl-Heinz Weigelt
January 19, 1951 – October 21, 2026
It is with heavy hearts that the family announces the passing of Karl-Heinz Weigelt, who passed away peacefully on October 21, 2026, at the Thunder Bay Regional Health and Sciences Centre, surrounded by his family and in the arms of his loving wife, Sylvia.
Karl was born on January 19, 1951, in Rethmar, Germany, to Karl Weigelt Sr. and Martha Lorenzen and later raised by his stepfather Herman Lorenzen. On November 26, 1970, he married Sylvia Schreiber, beginning a marriage and partnership that would span nearly 56 years. Their daughter Liane was born in Germany, and on May 15, 1975, Karl, Sylvia and Liane immigrated to Canada and settled in Dryden, Ontario. Their family later grew with the birth of their second daughter, Tania.
Shortly after arriving in Dryden, Karl began working at the Dryden paper mill, bringing with him his training as a bricklayer from Germany. He spent more than 30 years at the mill, eventually becoming a bricklayer foreman before retiring in 2008. Karl took tremendous pride in his work and was respected for his knowledge and experience. He was always willing to share his knowledge with others and lend a hand wherever his skills and experience could help, forming many lasting relationships and friendships throughout his years at the mill. Even after retirement, he continued working for M.M.A. Products Canada during mill shutdowns and on other projects.
Family was always at the centre of Karl’s life. Together, Karl and Sylvia built their family home in Dryden. It became the home where Karl and Sylvia raised their daughters and where many years of family memories were made.
Karl took great pride in watching his daughters, Liane and Tania, grow up and remained close to them throughout their adult lives. He cared deeply about their happiness and success, encouraged them to work hard and taught them by example the importance of a strong work ethic and taking pride in what they did. He was there to celebrate their accomplishments and important milestones, including their graduations, while his sense of humour brought plenty of laughter along the way. As they grew older and began building lives of their own, family traditions remained important. Christmas was especially meaningful to Karl, and the tradition of coming together as a family continued throughout his daughters’ adult lives and eventually grew to include the next generation.
His grandchildren, Essence, Riley and Payton, brought another very special joy to Karl’s life. To them, he was Opa (which became his new name to everyone), and he remained a close and constant presence in their lives. He took great pride in watching them grow and made a point of being there for the important moments along the way, attending their activities and sporting events, graduations, and other family milestones.
Karl especially enjoyed bringing his family together. Some of his most treasured memories came from large family suppers, countless games of cards and time spent travelling together. Family trips to Germany provided many special memories, as did memorable trips to Disney World in Florida. Time spent together as a family in Arizona also provided many lasting memories. Karl took great pleasure in welcoming family and friends from Germany to Canada and sharing with them the country and life that he and Sylvia had made their home. For Karl, some of the best times were simply those spent together with the people he loved.
Karl had a lifelong passion for soccer, beginning as a young boy in Germany and continuing after he made Canada his home. His love of the game extended beyond playing, as he also spent time coaching Barclays youth, sharing his knowledge and enthusiasm for soccer with a younger generation. He remained an avid soccer fan throughout his life, with Bayern Munich always being his favourite Bundesliga team. He also enjoyed hunting and fishing and looked forward to the many trips and good times spent outdoors with friends.
Gardening also became an important part of Karl’s life. It was something he and Sylvia worked on together, spending many hours side by side in their garden. It became not only something they could work on and take pride in, but another way for the two of them to enjoy their time together and the home and life they had built.
Beginning around 2000, Karl and Sylvia began spending a significant part of their winters in Mesa, Arizona, a tradition they continued through Karl’s working years and into retirement. Their winters in Arizona became an important part of their life together, providing time to relax, socialize, play cards and enjoy the company of both longtime friends and the many new friendships they formed there.
Karl had a natural ability to connect with people wherever he went. His outgoing nature, love of conversation and genuine enjoyment of time spent with family and friends resulted in friendships that lasted throughout every stage of his life. He will be deeply missed by the many people whose lives he touched.
Karl is survived by his loving wife, Sylvia (Schreiber); daughters Liane and Tania; son-in-law Jason; grandchildren Essence, Riley and Payton; his brother Dierk (Carmen); and his sister Brigitte. He is also survived by his sisters-in-law Gerda, Marlies, Regina, Margret, and Sibylle; brothers-in-law Erhard and Siegfried; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Karl was predeceased by his parents, Karl Weigelt Sr. and Martha Lorenzen; his stepfather Herman Lorenzen; his parents-in-law, Erhard and Irmgard; his brothers Eugen, Benno and Peter; his sisters-in-law Rita and Gunda; and his son-in-law Don.
His family will remember him with love and gratitude for a life built around family, friendship, hard work and helping others, and for the many memories he leaves behind.
Karl's family would like to express their gratitude to the staff at the Dryden Regional Health Centre, Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre, and the Tamarack Lodge during his end-of-life journey.
A Celebration of Life will take place on Monday, November 9, 2026, at 11am at The Centre, 100 Casimir Ave, Dryden, ON, with Pastor Velma Henderson officiating. Interment will take place at a later date.
